A project built in response to a resident, who was sending us a monthly email asking about the starting date of what he called a ‘’drop in’’ space to break social isolation! Café Rencontre is designed for residents of NDG to combat social isolation by providing a welcoming environment for community members to gather, engage in conversation, and participate in enjoyable activities.

The program launched in October 2023. Since the beginning of 2024, the Café Rencontre program has seen a significant increase in participation. This growth has been especially notable among women aged 40 and above, many of whom have found in the program a welcoming space to connect, break social isolation, and support one another. As a result, we observed a rise in the number of participants seeking resources and building meaningful connections across diverse cultural backgrounds. Participation grew to between 30 and 50 individuals per session during this period.

It has successfully created a space where participants feel welcome and supported. It has enabled individuals to form new friendships, gain advice, and access resources to help with their challenges.

The Coffee Rencontre program offers a variety of activities, including:

• Coffee and Check-In
• Fun Activities
• Basic Technology Consultations
• Access to Neighborhood Services

There is a need for more space and flexible scheduling, as residents have expressed a desire for the program to occur more frequently throughout the week.
