The Green, Active, Healthy Neighbourhoods project in Southeastern NDG aims to redesign streets and public spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. The plan, developed between June 2010 and November 2011, involved a series of participatory activities where residents met with the project’s team and discussed proposed design solutions for their neighbourhood.

NDG 2020 PUBLIC ASSEMBLY ON TRANSPORTATION ISSUES - OCTOBER 2012

On October 2012, the NDG Community Council hosted a public assembly on the topic of transportation issues in the NDG neighbourhood. Patrick Morency, from the Direction de la Santé publique, talked about the relationship between speed, traffic volumes and casualties. He also discussed different alleviation measures that could be implemented to reduce the number of accidents on our streets.

Odile Craig and Catherine Thibault from the Follow-up Committee for the Green neighbourhood Plan for Southeastern NDG also took advantage of this opportunity to present the different traffic calming measures that have been implemented in 2012 as a result of the work of the Committee and several other groups active in the neighbourhood for several years.

Check the NDG Free Press and their coverage of the event here (p. 14).

CONTEXT

The widespread adoption of the automobile as the main mode of transportation over the past several decades and the subsequent effect of automobiles on the design of cities has contributed to major environmental and health issues, mostly within urban environments. In addition to the proliferation of airborne pollutants within the atmosphere and the increased risk of accidents, automobile travel promotes a more sedentary lifestyle.  This departure from active lifestyles has been linked to increases in the risk of obesity, especially among the younger section of the population, which in turn places a burden on the entire Quebec population.

The shift from passive transportation to active transportation (walking, biking, public transit, etc) could significantly neutralize all of the aforementioned problems while simultaneously improving the quality of life in urban neighbourhoods. To make this transition possible, however, it is necessary to provide citizens with physical infrastructure and built environments that promote safety and conviviality.

The Green, Active, Healthy Neighbourhoods project focuses on neighbourhoods in an effort to improve the environment for young people and relies on the collaboration of local stakeholders.

 Green Neighbourhood in Southeastern NDG

The Green, Active, Healthy Neighbourhoods project in Southeastern NDG aims to redesign streets and public spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. The plan, developed between June 2010 and November 2011, involved a series of participatory activities where residents met with the project’s team and discussed proposed design solutions for their neighbourhood.

Four priorities were established for improving mobility in the neighbourhood by Mobiligo, the initial partner organization, and the local neighbourhood committee.

  1. North-South connections in the neighbourhood
  2. Links between key destinations
  3. Linking up the district with Montréal’s cycling network
  4. Access to the Villa-Maria and Vendôme métro stations

The QVAS project for Southeastern NDG recommends various interventions for a specific sector of the neighbourhood (see map below). It is expected that these actions will eventually be extended outside of the initial limits of the project.

About Green, Active, and Healthy Neighbourhoods

The project Green, Active, and Healthy Neighbourhoods in Southeastern NDG, or Green Southeastern NDG, aims to redesign neighbourhoods in order to prioritize walking, cycling, and other modes of active transportation. It is one of the initial four pilot projects of the larger Green, Active, and Healthy Neighbourhoods project, which is being carried out by the Montréal Urban Ecology Centre in collaboration with the Coalition québécoise sur la problématique du poids.

The Green Southeastern NDG is being executed by the NDG Community Council with the support of the Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Borough and the Montréal Urban Ecology Center.
